TELECON The President (Brought in 3/21/71) page 5 K : I'll call him this weekend. P : All right. K: I think that we should not or at least I would recommend that we not take on the press too much in this inter- view because P: I'm not gonng to. K : While it is true that they have reportedly one-sidedly that if they had reported none of the successes, I am beginning to think that some of their battle reports at least were not they were incomplete but they were not totally wrong. P: Yeah, yeah. Well, let me but it this way. I think what we've got to do is to say 'let's keep it all in perspective. There have been gains and losses and so forth but I think what I have to get across is that the press has created the first that we were there for a purpose that we were not for and second that we did not accomplish our purpose at all and third that it was an utter disaster. Now those conclusions are wrong. K : Those are wrong. P: Now, in terms of the battle reports and all that sort of thing. Sure, some of the battee reports are right, but on the other hand, they have not reported any successes: they have reported only the failures. Don't you agree? K: I would agree. And it was essentially a big net plus. In terms of the military situation. D: So that's the only thing I'm going to do is to get across the perspective. As far as the uh your concern of course is that you don't want to get out 8 £ whack on the press and then find that the press is right, is that the point? K : Well that's I do not exclude that next week as these withdrawals continue that some of it may turn into what can be represented as a rout. P : Yeah. Does Moorer think that too? K : No, but I think that the military don't understand this problem very well. He doesn't think it but then their predictions haven't been all that good. P : No. K : And so I think
