TELECON (Tape)
The President -- March 21, 1971, 10:00 a. m.
Brought in 3/22, page 5
comes out. I just
If Abrams feels confident, then I'll be a little more
confident tomorrow night. You see my point?
K:
I think you should give an impression of confidence and serenity,
Mr. President.
P:
Well, I'll do that, but I mean if I know it's going to come off pretty
well
-- let me put it this way: the thing that we always forget here is that
we are so God-damned honest -- Johnson, of course, just lied, deliberately
lied about the whole thing. And McNamara lied at Johnson's direction. Now,
we have never lied. I will never lie; I can't live with that. On the other hand,
I know psychology and, therefore, we've got to look ahead and point out this
thing. And we've also got to knock down the lies of the other side. They are
lying all the time about this.
K:
Absolutely. I think that Abrams believes, Moorer believes that this
operation in total was a considerable success for us and I think we ought to
stress that. Even that New York Times writer says it set the other side back
by several months.
P:
That might be a good
XIXIXgX thing to quote, 'as so and so wrote in the
New York Times, and he's probably correct, XXXXXXXX that it set the other
side back several months.
K:
I'11 get you the correct quote. I'll get you the right reference.
P:
Get the name of the fellow -- as he said in the New York Times.
Quoting the New York Times is a real slap in the face at the leftists.
K:
Right. I'll get that typed up for you and send it.
P:
If it's any good, we'll use it. All right, now, as far as anything else
is concerned, the main thing is I think the psychological -- Thieu has a
psychological victory to win. He's got to give them one more whap -- you know,
another whack. And Abrams does not foresee a debacle this week then?
K:
Absolutely not. As of this morning, absolutely not, but I'll make triply
sure
P:
Before Monday.
K:
before Monday evening.
