The Pope will be interested to have your appraisal of the Middle East situation and an indication of your policy. - You may want to say we hope that he will continue to exert his efforts to counsel restraint and to urge those involved in the Middle East crisis to restore peace to their troubled area. Biafra - The Pope has been much troubled by the events in Biafra. He has sent several missions to Nigeria and to Biafra to urge a settlement of conflict. As recently as December 1968, he sent letters to the head of the Federal Government of Nigeria and to the leader of Biafra calling for a resumption of negotia- tions and a Christmas truce. He will probably express to you his anguish over these events and ask for continued efforts by the United States to bring about peace in Nigeria. CONFIDENTIAL
