to exert his efforts to counsel restraint and to urge
those involved in the Middle East crisis to restore
peace to their troubled area.
Biafra
- The Pope has been much troubled by the events
in Biafra. He has sent several missions to Nigeria
and to Biafra to urge a settlement of conflict. As
recently as December 1968, he sent letters to the
head of the Federal Government of Nigeria and to the
leader of Biafra calling for a resumption of negotia-
tions and a Christmas truce. He will probably express
to you his anguish over these events and ask for
continued efforts by the United States to bring about
peace in Nigeria.
