Dear Mr. Block:
I have just received
a note from Ned Turkington to which
he has attached your memo and the
check from Mr. Truman Collins.
Our sincere thanks to you
for all you are doing to help the Contra
Costa organization, and for the obviously
effective job you are doing in other
areas as well, as evidenced by Mr. Collins'
generous support. He will be receiving
acknowledgment direct from Dick Nixon.
Many thanks, and keep up
the good work.

Dear Mr. Brown:
Mr. Frederick Ehrenreich, President and
General Manager of the Claude L. Murphy Construction Co.,
handed his card to Dick Nixon one day last week and said
he wanted to do anything he could to be of assistance to
the campaign. Written on his card was "with SCAT".
As I wrote you on September 15th, Dick would
like very much to get a group of the old SCAT people
together and I am wondering if you have given any further
thought to forming a group for active participation during
the remaining weeks of the campaign? If so, Mr. Ehrenreich
should be contacted, and perhaps you might like to bring
him into the picture. The address on his card is 1046 South
Olive Street, Los Angeles 15, telephone - RI 9-6001.
I'll very much appreciate hearing from you,
and needless to say, Dick too would appreciate the old
group getting together and would, I know, enjoy seeing you.
With kind regards.

Dear Don:
So far, we have not
received a tape of Dick's Oakland
Rally speech.
Have you checked with the
people up there? Perhaps they
did the job.
Sorry I can't help out
in this instance.
Best regards.
Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Root:
Your letter of September 26th
was appreciated. My personal thanks for your
generous remarks on the job we are trying to do.
I do want you to know that
Dick Nixon has asked Judge Coakley to participate
in all seven of the Telethons which have been
scheduled in various cities, and he is planning
to do so.
We certainly agree with your
evaluation in this connection, and feel certain the
Telethon appearances will prove effective in
helping Judge Coakley reach the television audiences
in strategic locations.
Again, our thanks for your thoughtful
letter and for your fine support.

Dear Mrs. Hamburger:
Through Al Tisch and others, I have
heard of the outstanding job you are doing for
the campaign organization in your area.
Dick Nixon is fighting one of the
hardest-hitting campaigns California has ever
seen. I don't have to tell you how much it
means to him - and to all of us - to have the
support of people like you who, in turn, by
their own activities and enthusiasm, keep
adding to the list that will spell victory in
November.
We are all grateful to you - and
for you. Keep up the good work.

Bumper Strips
cc: Carol Arth
As one more step in trying to get bumper strips actually
on bumpers, it has been suggested that a supply be
made available for each coffee hour, and that a crew
of one or two be specifically assigned to put the bumper
strips on cars while the meeting is in progress.
This should be accomplished by using our device of
asking the people as they arrive if they would like a
bumper strip -- sticking it under their windshield wiper --
then putting it on during the meeting.

Newspaper Endorsement Program
I am sorry about the delay in the report on who is
checking on the newspaper endorsement program. I
thought I had reported this to you some time ago,
but apparently did not.
Fred Haffner is responsible for overall coordination
from headquarters.
Herb Kalmbach is riding herd on Southern California
County and Community Chairmen, and Jim Halley and
Ed Slevin are doing it for Northern California.
We have set up a 3-way card file on all papers in the
state to keep a running tally on current status and as
a follow-up device on the Chairmen until we get a final
report on what each paper is going to do.
Each local Chairman is being instructed to give careful
thought to who should make the contact with each paper,
bearing in mind the importance of the relationship
between the person making the contact and the publisher.

I have been advised by several people
recently who have had contact with Joe Shell that
he is declining some of their requests for participation

gives is that while he has been asked by several
others to do many things in the Nixon campaign, he
has never been asked by Nixon himself to do anything.

As discussed with Ross Barrett, we cannot handle
the contacts you have requested be made with

Do you feel we can and/or should get Yorty

Maybe we can play this one both ways.

I assume that someone of Yorty's position and prominence
might be interested in hitting him for this remark.

At the Pomona Rally, Don Nixon says that Mr. Frank
Urich (spelling?), who is an auto dealer in Whittier,
told him that Dick Nixon had always used one of
of the cars he (Urich) loaned him in each of his
campaigns. This custom was not followed in 1960,
and Urich is convinced this is why Nixon did not win.
He very much wants Nixon to use one of his cars in this
campaign to assure victory.
Will you please follow-up with Urich and please do it
yourself. Tell him Dick asked you to see if we could
borrow a car from him for some of our campaigning, etc. etc.

A couple of suggestions regarding "Operation Thank-you".
1)
I think it might be helpful if you listed
some of the standard people for whom you will
need letters on the form you send out. This
would be a reminder to the local chairmen to
include these people. I refer to such people as
the General Chairman of the Rally, the Minister
who delivers the Invocation, the leader of the
Pledge of Allegiance, the Motorcade Chairman,
the Nixon Chairman etc. etc.
I think Nick Ruwe and Bob Hamilton could give you
a run-down on those who should be covered.
2)
As you may know, the people in the travel-party
are making every attempt to pick up specific
information for use in the thank-you letters
to those individuals whose participation deserves
special commendation. Your procedure should be
to use the standard form letter unless you get
word from the traveling party that special handling
or wording is recommended.

This is a suggestion for a piece of literature which I
think should be given immediate priority. It could be
extremely effective in the last several weeks of the
campaign.
On the day that Nixon announced the vote count for the
Presidency and then made his retiring speech in the Senate,
many of the Democratic leaders rose to comment on and
commend his outstanding service, character etc.
These quote/will all be in the Congressional Record and
Agnes should be able to supply them.
The literature piece I am thinking of might be a folder
which, on the cover, simply says "What Leading Democrats
say about Nixon." Inside would be the quotes referred to
above, with perhaps a picture of each of the individuals.
Added to this might be the Eleanor Roosevelt quote regarding
Nixon's leadership of the President's Committee on
Government Contracts. Frey has this quote.
Will you please get someone going on this? I would especially
look for Kennedy, Johnson, Rayburn, McCormick, Manafield etc.

Florence Wellborn, who is working with the
Celebrities Committee, made a suggestion regarding
televised coffee hours some time ago. The Public Relations
Committee's decision is not to go ahead with this plan,
since we strongly feel that all funds should be utilized
for TV spots with maximum audience rather than for TV
coffee hours which do not reach very many people.
Mrs. Wellborn did mention, however, that she knew
of about $2,000 she could pull together for this program.
With proper follow-through, it might be possible to get
this $2,000 into the main stream of the campaign.

I think his suggestion on page 5 that we have the Nixon

I also think in the large Counties, our Community Chairmen

In these meetings, our representative should ask the YR
organization and individual members of the club for all
the help they can possibly give to the Nixon campaign in

There are also a number of other suggestions and specific
