Dear Robbie:
Thanks for your letter of October 16th, and
for sending along the copy of the letter from
Mr. Werner Carlson.
We do appreciate having his comments on the
effectiveness of the General's visit. Everyone
agreed the speech was terrific and on balance
the scheduling could not have been better.
I am not sure what, if anything, could be done
about a follow-up, but am sure many would agree
with your thinking.
I'll ride on my 400,000 figure. Things look
better every day.
Many thanks, and best regards.

Dear Bob:
Enclosed is a copy of a letter from Mr. Werner Carlson of the Loma Linda
Food Company, which I think merits very careful consideration. You will
remember it was through Mr. Carlson's good offices that I was able to
arrange the meeting with Dick and Elder Bietz, President of the Pacific
Coast Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Churches.
I realize it may pose a considerable problem to get General Eisenhower to
return to California. However, in view of the greatly increased interest
the General is taking in politics and his close friendship with Dick, he
might be willing to do it. If the race is close, I am sure a day or two
which he could spend in California a week before the election would tip the
scales.
I am sure you will agree with me and will do everything possible to see if
something of this kind cannot be worked out. Regardless of what happens,
you may want to advise Mr. Carlson directly of your appreciation of his interest.
I hope you are correct in your estimate of a 400,000 majority. It sounds good
anyway.
With best personal wishes,
Sincerely yours,
Rashie

Dear Mr. Carlson:
Robbie Robinson has just sent me a copy of
your letter to him.
We do appreciate your interest and your
comments in connection with the General's
visit. It was a great boon to the campaign,
and I am sure many agree with your suggestion
that a follow-up visit would mean much.
We feel the turning point was the UPI debate.
The general's visit following on the heels
really added up to a new picture. Reports
are all good. Things look better as each day
passes, and we feel certain this will be the
case right up to the November 6th victory.
Thank you again for your interest and support.
Best regards.

Dear Robbie:
As election time nears I suppose all of us who are vitally interested is
the caddidates become increasingly aware of the necessity of doing every-
thing possible to assure their election.
I read in the Sunday Times yesterday that Keanedy has new revised his
plans and expects to spend two full days is California. I - sure you
were very such impressed - as I was - with President Eisenhower's address
from San Francisco. I have heard comments from numerous individuals since
that time indicating that had he made such a forthright declaration to 1940
that Dick Nixon would be president today. I assume that be means what be
says and is willing to give the assistance and corporation now that package
was not given in 1960.
It is my firm convistion that it would be very helpful to Bick's
if Eisenhower were to spend at least two days is California prior up clos-
tion time. I think $100-a-plate dimers are wonderful, especially - is
comes to reising money but as for as bringing is the reak and file -
I cannot say that I an convinced that they have much effect. If
should spend a couple of days is the State and appair with Blak in e wall
organized program in the more pupulare of - 1
world have a telling effect. For example,
Las Angeles including East Lee Angeles, populous areas of the am
Valley and into other important srons of the State would really "gos
the people."
I feel strengly that something like this would be very beneficial. The
will know better then I whether or not it is a possibility but at this
stage of the compaign I think that it is almostic unsecrity. We could
regret that it wasn't done on Nevember 7:
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Ruud:
Your letter addressed to Mr. Nixon has
been forwarded to my office for reply.
As I am sure you will quickly understand,
in these final few weeks of the campaign, it is
necessary for Mr. Nixon to be travelling almost con-
stantly, and we of course wanted to acknowledge your
letter without further delay.
We will certainly hold your application
for a position as chauffeur on file. I de know that at
this time such an opening does not exist, but in the
event something should develop along this line in the
future, your letter will be kept available and your
application fully considered.
I do want to assure you Mr. Nixon will
appreciate your writing him, and receiving your good
wishes for the campaign effort.
With kind regards.

My contact with Betty Granger Reid was immediately
following the primary. I explained we were in the process
of finalising programs for the general election period and
had, at the time, nothing definite about which to write her
but that we would follow up with her later.
It was then referred to Herb Kalmbach. Dick Ports
also received a letter from her, which he referred to Herb.
Herb wrote her on September 11th. She is not a secretary
and there hasn't been a spot on the staff - physically or
financially - where she could be employed. Herb advised her
of the status quo, and did say he would like very much to meet
her and hoped she would stop into the headquarters when she
was next in Los Angeles.

Dear Mrs. Reid:
This is to acknowledge somewhat belatedly your earlier
correspondence to Dick Ports.
We had hoped that there would be a placement for you
with the Nixon for Governor Committee, especially in view
of the fact that you had worked in past campaigns for Mr.
Nixon. I am sorry to advise you that we have no opening
at present. I would, however, like very much to meet with
you if you are in Los Angeles in the weeks ahead. Our
Southern California Nixon Headquarters location is at 3950
Wilshire Boulevard.
Your support over the years for Richard Nixon is cer-
tainly gratifying -- thank you for contacting us.

Dear Dick:
I've just mailed the enclosed letter to Mr. Haldeman.
I also wanted you to have a copy, and a copy of my resume.
I feel that, within California--just as on the national
level--the minority vote can be a decisive factor in winning an
election. In any event, I'd hate to have us "miss the boat" in
any way on obtaining it.
I imagine that you're taking a respite from the heavy
campaigning of the past few weeks windup; and will soon be back
in harness for the "big fight".
Looking forward to hearing from you again, I am,
Most sincerely,
Betty Betty Granger Reid

Mr. H. R. Haldeman
Campaign Manager
WIXON FOR GOVERNOR
3908 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles 5, California
Dear Mr. Haldeman:
Upon my arrival in California tomside permanently, I expressed
to Mr. Nixon a keen desre to engage in some tangible campaign work. Since then,
I have been in contact with Dick Ports.
In 1952, the Republican National Committee arranged for me to
take a leave of absence from my newspaper job in New York and join the campaign
staff of Mr. Nixon. I travelled with Mr. Nixon and his staff on behalf of the
minority vote.
I have obtained much added, and valuable, experience since then
and am anclous to perform a similar service during the Vice President's gubernaterial
campaign at this time.
Mr. Nixon has often expressed an interest in garnering the
minority vote. I agree that it is a most important deciding factor in the State of
California. I would like to make an impact into that "balance of power" vote
for Mr. Nixon.
I have enclosed a resume for your files.
I am free to travel throughout the State of California during the
campaign. It is my opinion that we can start early and make inroads into Negro
religious, fraternal and women groups in the State. This, together with the
endorsement of respected Negro leaders, should combine to make an impressive showing
at the polls.
With best regards to members of the Nixon For Governor staff, I
m,
Most sincerely yours,
Betty Granger Reid

Talked to Loie about Betty Granger Reid -- she knew her aajBet
Granger. She did work for RN in'52 and she thinks she was used

again in '56. Betty Reid was well liked by everyone as she recalls.
Loie doesn't think she had typing and shorthand skills -- at least
not the secretarial type -- more for contact. RN did try to get her
a job on Government Contracts Committee but she got a job elsewhere.
She was good.

Dear Mrs. Reid:
Coot
Thank you very much for your
letter of June 6th. I am sorry this
reply has been delayed, but had hoped I
might be able to write you along more
definite lines than is the case.
We are still in the process of
considering various programs and if I may,
I would like to get in touch with you a
little later on when I will be in a better
position to discuss possible areas in which
you might have an interest. Certainly your
background is excellent, and we are most
appreciative of your interest in and desire
to work for the campaign organization.
With kindest regards.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

NIXON FOR GOVERNOR
3908 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles 5, California
Dear Mr. Haldeman:
Upon my arrival in California toreside permanently, I expressed
to Mr. Nixon a keen desire to engage in some tangible campaign work. Since then,
I have been in contact with Dick Ports.
In 1952, the Republican National Committee arranged for me to
take a leave of absence from my newspaper job in New York and join the campaign
staff of Mr. Nixon. I travelled with Mr. Nixon nd his staff on behalf of the
minority vote.
I have obtained much added, and valuable, experience since then
and am anxious to perform a similar service during the Vice President's gubernat rial
campaign at this time.
Mr. Nixon has often expressed an interest in garnering the
minority vote. I agree that it is a most important deciding factor in the State of
California. I would like to make an impact into that "balance of power" vote
for Mr. Nixon.
I have enclosed a resume for your files.
I am free to travel throughout the State of California during the
campaign. It is my opinion that we can start early and make inroads into Negro
religious, fraternal and women's groups in the State. This, together with the
endorsement of respected Negro leaders, should combine to make an impressive showing
at the polls.
With best regards to members of the Nixon For Governor staff, I
am,
Most sincerely yours,
Betty Reid

lives at 3214 West Santa Barbara Avenue, Los Angeles. Her telephone
number is 293-3267.
I did a little checking with our own people and confirmed that she
was on the 1952 campaign train as Val Washington's representative.
At that time she was on leave fromthe Amsterdam News. I know of
no deregatory information with regard to her and my own recollection
is that she had a very pleasant, vavacious personality. I believe you
Rid
were thinking about her for the news bureau. However, if you are not
going to call her will you please let me know 80 that I can do so as I think
we should keep in touch even if we have no support spot available at this
moment.
As a matter of fact, I do not know whether she is interested in a
job or just meant that she was ready to be a volunteer.

Dear Miss Mills:
Mr. Lewis Helms has just written us
that you addressed a letter to Nixon Headquarters
suggesting a plan for organizing youth of high school
age to help in the campaign effort, and that to date you
have had no acknowledgment.
We are always distressed to have a
situation like this reported to us. We have attempted
to locate your letter, but thus far have been unable
to track it down. Not knowing when you wrote, nor to
whom your letter was addressed makes it difficult for us
to check out.
I do hope you will send us a copy of
your letter, and please mark it to my attention. We do
have a "High School Students for Nixon" Committee, and
I am asking Dan Waters, our Contact Director, to acquaint
you with this program, but we will await the copy of your
letter with interest.
We are most appreciative of your interest
and support.

Sorry to miss your call the

Just wanted you to know we
have contacted our Northern California

touch with Mr. Floyd McElroy. We have
also arranged for the contact to be
made down here with Mr. Malcolm McHugh.
Thanks much for passing these

Thanks very much for
your letter of August 14th.
Please let me know
as soon as you have Mr. Beitz'
schedule. I agree it is certainly
advisable to try to work out a
mutually convenient time at some
point in the campaign for a meeting

I'll wait to hear from

Dear Uncle Al:
Sorry to be so long acknowledging
your check of June 28th.
As a matter of fact, I took the family
to Laguna for about 10 days. This is my first
day back in the office, and it's been a red letter
one, as I'm sure you will agree after reading the
papers. Things are being righted, however. It's
all part of the game.
In any event, I'm winding up the day
pleasantly -- thanking you for your help. It's
really appreciated.
Hope to see you soon.

Dear Jim:
Your letter of June 28th was received
after Bob left the city. He will be gone for about
ten days.
Just wanted you to know I have sent Nancy
Finch's check over to Price Waterhouse & Co. for
processing so that her acknowledgment will not be
held up.
I am also getting off for a few days rest.
Herb Kalmbach is holding down the fort while Bob is
gone, so if anything comes up, give him a call.
Thanks for your many kindnesses to me,

Sorry this is a little late in getting to you, but it arrived at the
office after I had left for New York. Therefore I would appre-
ciate promptest acknowledgement of this!
Good seeing you Monday. Will call you in ten days so we can
get together to see where we go from here.

he has a certain following and was strong for Shell - now
wants to endorse Nixon, and I thought you might want to get
some publicity out of it he's a likable guy - a really
