CHAPIN Bob Haldeman called today and read a memorandum in which you indicated to Hartog that the President wants Bob Hope to be the Master of Ceremonies at some of the fund-raising dinners, as well as the San Francisco lunch. This memorandum was written several days ago and prior to our even beginning to check out the President's desires on this subject. You were completely off base. We want from you a complete plan for each one of the dinners. It is my understanding that Jeb Magruder has put Tony McDonald in charge of the dinners and he is working up proposals. We will give no approval on anything until we have seen the complete plan. You are not under any circumstances to ever commit the President or the President's desires unless you actually know it is a fact. We are very distressed by the worling of your memorandum to Hartog. CHAPIN The President wants to have both girls get into the southern states more than we now have them on the schedule. We also should consider putting them into some of the mountain and farm states, maybe moreso than we now have them. ce: Bill Codus
