Friday, July 02, 2010 Page 1 of 1 SEPTEMBER 14, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR JEB MAGRUDER We have a very unhappy surrogate: Treasury Secretary George Shultz. First, and foremost, your ruling (attributed to Haldeman and the President) that he must travel commercial puts a serious crimp in his ability to function. He has a Secret Service detail, a PIO and an aide who customarily travel with him and he prefers to take his wife. Whatever you may consider the merits, I'm writing you to let you know that you have a morale problem on your hands and I assume you'll know how to handle it. Second, he was very critical of the audio quality of the television tapes which were shown at Blair House or somewhere last night by you. He has a feeling that they may have been produced by the same fellow who did the Phoenix, Arizona film in 1970 since they have very much the same quality and character about them. Third, he was disturbed at the response given to the gentleman from Oregon or Washington who complained that he had been asked to schedule four meetings and had been promised speakers and some two or three of them had been cancelled. He felt the man had been brushed off with an unsatisfactory answer and that the circumstance showed a serious breakdown in speakers scheduling. John a D. Ehrlichman cc: H. R. Haldeman Clark MacGregor
