MEMORANDUM FOR I
DWIGHT CHAPIN
FROM I
H.R. HALDEMAN
I was & little alarmed to learn from Maurice Stane today that
Wally Hickel has accepted Stans' invitation for Hickel to second
the nomination of the President.
Stans tells me that Bill Timmons told Stans to ask Hickel and Stans
has done so.
Stans further advises that the price for this seconding will be that
Hickel wants to talk with the President about the active role he will
play in the campaign and also he wants some responsibility next
year such as the Arctic Commission or a trip to China on a part-
time basis.
This is apparently totally out ofecontrol. I wonder how mahy other
seconding speech commitments have been made prior to approval!

MEMORANDUM FOR:
MAURICE STANS
FROM:
H. R. HALDEMAN
Taft Schreiber called the other dav to say that he
feels that your two current fund raisers in New York
are not aggressive enough. He cited a couple of
examples where they could have raised much more and
suggests using Gus Levy, or other aggressive
individuals. Will you call Schreiber and cover this
matter with him?
He may have some ideas about fund raisers in connection
with Bob Ellsworth, also, his political organization
within the Wall Street Community.
