He feels this is our best chance to\nmake inroads into the Negro community. I am inclined\nto agree with him. The professional Negro radicals simply\ncan't be for us any more than the white radicals can be\nfor us. Just as we are trying to appeal to our own\nconstituency among the whites, we should remember that\nthere is a similar constituency, although eminently\nsmaller, among Negroes. Let's not overlook them in\nattempting to pander to the radicals - black or white.\nPm\nRichard Nixon\nDecember 30, 1969\nMEMORANDUM FOR\nBob Haldeman\nI want you to discuss with Connie Stuart using\nTricia more - where she is willing to do it - for non-\npolitical appearances, particularly where they involve TV.\nFor Example, where someone wants me to go on the air\nfor the cancer drive or the heart fund drive, have Tricia\ndo it. My attitude here is reflected by my reaction to\nthe silly television ads in which the President of a\ncompany goes on TV instead of a good actor or actress\ndoing the commercial. Tricia is extremely effective and\nI think with a little coaxing will do more.\nAlso as we get further along in the campaign\nyear - in very selective races - I think she would be\nwilling to make a political appearance. Generally speaking,\nhowever, there should be a rule that she makes no appear-\nance unless there is TV coverage. For example, when she\nor anyone else visits Chicago, we should never fail to get\na spot on the Kupcinet show and the same applies to other\ngood local shows where we are likely to get a better break\nthan from the networks.\nPm\nRichard Nixon"
