EXECUTIVE THE WHITE HOUSE PL/3T30 WASHINGTON 7435 A PR7-1/7 E July 7, 1969 746-11-1/D Dought MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT John H. RE: Meeting with Senator Tower and Congressman Peter HB., relinghuysen on July 8 at 4 PM Senator Tower recommended this meeting with Congressman Frelinghuysen for the purpose of trying to convince the Congressman to be a candidate next year for the U. S. Senate seat held by Senator Harrison (Pete) Williams. Senator Tower says this has the strong blessing of Senator Ciffeed Case and that the Campaign Committee is convinced Freling- X huysen would be the most electable Republican candidate. X State Chairman Nelson Gross has his reservations. He would want Frelinghuysen to agree to support Cahill for Governor this year. The other question concerns Freling- huysen's willingness to really work, as he has been pre- viously elected from a Republican District without much work. Gross and Cahill were to see the President prior to this meeting but Cahill's daughter was seriously injured in an automobile wreck and the meeting had to be cancelled. Frelinghuysen will be prompted in advance by Tower and Dent on Cahill's race. S. Harry S. Dent
