ECUTIVE
January 11, 1971
Daniel P maynihan
FG6-11-1/ehric FGI kman, 20
Dear Pat:
I appreciated very deeply having your letter of
January first rather personalizing the best part
of your East Room remarks for me.
I hope that you will want to scribble off ideas to
me, criticisms, comments and musings whenever they
come to you and you have time to put them on paper.
If there's no time for paper, call collect. I think
you know how much I respect and admire how you think
and act. No one in this Administration in the past
two years has been more steadfast and loyal, more
discreet, more influential for good, more constructive.
When the history of the Administration is written,
I feel sure that the first two years will be stamped,
by some perceptive historian, as the Moynihan Years.
If they ever ask me, that's what I'll tell them.
In a way it is good that the Moynihans are all together
in one place, all of the time, and that you are teaching
young people to think the way you think and do things
the way you have come to do them.
At the same time, you are irreplaceable to the
Administration in the literal sense of the word.
I find that there are some people in government who
go around looking over their left shoulder and thinking
to themselves, "What would Jack Anderson say about
that?". Jack Anderson is not my first choice for a
conscience. But I guess we all pick out people or
institutions whose opinions we value and tend to
measure our conduct by their hypothetical reactions.
I propose that the Domestic Council institutionalize
Moynihan in this capacity. From time to time we
will, if we may, send you proposals and ideas in order
that we'll know "what Moynihan would say about that".
I think it's important that we know.
-2-
You are a very good thing for this country and I
only hope that your comfortable pedagogical retreat
and the warm bosom of your family will not make you
content. From observation I think that it is
discontent that makes you the most constructive.
Thank you for your tolerance toward us dry
generalists. Please let me hear from you soon and
often.
With sincere personal regard.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Tod:
I did so enjoy meeting you and seeing Mr. Ehrlichman
again. The comments following his California Club speech
were great.
I'm enclosing a clip from the Pasadena Star News and
the list of those attending the news briefing. A good
amount of material was used on the radio because the story
went out on the syndicate wire.
The majority of reporters who covered the briefing
squirreled it away for background and several of them say
they have made good use of it.
Obviously, there were no television reporters because
any station with an ambulatory crew had them at the earthquake
scene all that week.
I flatly guarantee a full house and yards of type next
time you come our way. Unless, of course, we have another
earthquake, tornado, tidal wave, flood or simoon.
Please do come see us again and we'll do better by you.
Cordially,
Zan Thompson 2am
