Every once in a while around here, as you know, you have a judgment, make a decision, do a thing that works out so well that you tuck it away in your collection of satisfactions as perhaps one of the reasons that it was worthwhile for you to give up whatever you gave up to be here. My hunches and impressions about you back there in those campaign days are in that category. You made a tremendous contribution to the first term and to the President's development as President. I'm sure you know that, feel it, draw satisfaction from it, but I do too. You and Sallie are a couple of good things that have happened to us around here and to the extent that I had anything to do with your being here I am happy, satisfied and proud. My door is always open to you, of course. I want to know what you're thinking about from time to time and I hope you'll drop me a note whenever you have something on your mind. I also want to remain your friend and hope that on a strictly social basis we can keep in touch over the years. POSTAGED CENTRAL FILES -2- I have visions of Sallie down there in her kitchen, whippin' up cookies, rearranging the furniture and packing fishing trip picnics. I hope this return home is everything that you both wish it to be and that, at the same time, you find it possible to keep us all in your lives to some extent. Sincere thanks and best regards. Yours sincerely, John D. Ehrlichman Assistant to the President Mr. Robert J. Brown 1625 Eye Street, N. W. Suite 1010 Washington, D. C. 20006 JDE:jlh THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON February 1, 1973 Dear John: It is with special sense of gratitude and appreciation that I write you this letter. These past four years have been the most exciting and rewarding of my life. Needless to say, I never thought that meeting you back in Akron, Ohio during the '68 campaign would have such a profound effect on my life. Sallie and I have thoroughly enjoyed the relationship which we have shared with you, Jean and the family. In the days ahead, I look forward to working with you in this great enterprise of making government work for our people. I wish you God speed in all of your endeavors. Of course I will be willing, ready, and able to assist you whenever and wherever you wish. Thank you for making it possible for me to help so many of my fellowmen. I shall never forget it. Mot Sincerely, Robert J. Brown Honorable John Ehrlichman Assistant to the President The White House Washington, D.C. 20500
