One of the best parts of this job is hearing from old friends from school and the service that I've lost track of. I don't recall seeing you in England but I was at Bungay with the 446th in B-24s. I was on a lead crew and flew so seldom that I was still there at V-E Day. I went back to UCLA and on to Stanford Law School. We got married in law school and I turned down California jobs and went to Seattle where another attorney and I started a practice. We got pretty well settled down there in 18 years and the move here was quite a wrench for all of us. We have 5 children -- 3 boys and 2 girls -- who this week are scattered all over the country from Alaska to California to Colorado. Our youngsters look to be about the same ages as yours. If you find yourself down this way, I hope you'll let me know you're coming so that we can get together. Thanks for taking the time to write. Yours sincerely, John D. Ehrlichman Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs Mr. Karl/Eisele 4817 Holiday Drive Madison, Wisconsin 53711 JDE:jlh JUL 1 1970 MADISON NEWSPAPERS, INC. POST OFFICE BOX 989 115 S. CARROLL STREET MADISON WISCONSIN 53701 PHONE: AREA CODE 608- 256 5511 July 7, 1970 Mr. John Thrlichman The White House Washington, D.C. Dear John: For the nest several weeks I have been meaning to write you and finally the opportunity presents itself. Farly in the year T caught a TV newscast in which reference was made to a , John Phrlichman, advisor to the President' and T said to Janet that cen't be the same John Phrlichman T knew in the service - or could it'. After one of the national newsmamazines carried your picture I knew it had to be. With the time passage of some 26-27 years, I cen't remember exactly when and where we were in the Air Force together but do recall that it was in the Aviation Cadet program we met. You were a Navige- tor and : was a Combardier and I imagine we were grouped somewhere along the line because of the alo abetical sequence of our lest names. T remember your home was in Santa Ana, Celif. and it was typical Army luck that you weren't assigned to the Cedet base these instead of to Texas. The erticle I read about you recently said you now lived in Seettle. I dug out my old Army foot-locker and went through some of the old class books from pre-flicht, cunnery, etc., to see if it would identify where we met but had no success. I did come scross an old dusty letter which you hai sent me from Davis-Monthen Field in Arizona when we were in crew training and I was at Colorado Springs on the way to being trans ferred to Mountain Home, Ideho. I also have a vague re- collection of having biked over to your base in England but can't re- member if you were in 17's or 24's. I was in the latter with the 93rd 30 at Hardwicke. After losing my original crew after 11 missions I ro- tated to other lead crews until we were finally shot up over Hamburg on my 20th and were interned in Sweden in Jan. 11.5. That, as you can well imagine, was a very lucky break. After the wer, I came back to Madison and "inished my Senior year et the TW in Marketing and Advertising. Went to work for a firm in Chicago and discovered after 8 short while that I didn't care for the bi- city. Moved back to Medison and have been here ever since with THE CAPITAL TIMES you Wisconsin Journal Nabbed Released Hostages = come N G EVENING SUNDAY The Madison Newspapers where I am Manager of National Advertising. As you can see from the enclosed copy of our Christmas card from last year, Janet and I are kept from having much idle time by trying to raise our femily of 5 sons. Believe me when I say it's a challenge ! Enough of my autobiography, John. I know from daily press stories how busy your life must now be. When you have 8 chance, however, I'd very much like to hear some background on how you came out of the War; what you did afterwards SO far as school and jobs were concerned; the status of your family, etc. Also, if you can shed any light from your recollections on how and where our paths crossed. Best regards.
