Smith was also present and he was talking about\nour convention. He thought it would be most interesting to\neveryone if we had prominent people from different ethnic\nand other groups make an appearance. In other words to\nshow our people and let the world know that we do have\nthem in our party -- that we are doing something besides\ntrying to appeal to the WASP.\nHe also suggested that the better ones in this group\nshould be introduced to say a few words and keep the meetings\ninteresting.\nAnother thought he had -- it is a shame that the\nPresident and Vice President both speak on the same night.\nHe supposed there was nothing that could be done about that\nsince the President has to be last and we can't elect a VP nominee\nbefore the President is nominated -- but maybe both could be\nelected one night and the Vice President make his acceptance\nspeech that night and the President the last night.\nI have no idea who is in charge of the program for the\nconvention and I am only passing these on for whatever - if any -\ninterest they may be.\nMEMORANDUM\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nWASHINGTON\nAugust 3, 1972\nADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nED HARPER\nFROM:\nBARBARA FRANKLIN Barbara\nSUBJECT:\nActivities for Women at\nthe Convention\nAs you have requested, this memorandum outlines convention activities\ndesigned for participation by women.\nOVERVIEW\nAs an important step in improving our showing among women voters and\nprotecting the President from accusations that we \"don't care about\nwomen, 11 it is absolutely crucial that Republican women look involved,\nsubstantive, and important throughout the convention.\nMost importantly, many women need to be visible in\nsubstantive roles before the convention -- and the TV\naudience. Women need to be visible in about half the\nother roles as well -- on escort committees, leading\npledges to the flag, invocations, etc. (If we fail to do\nthis, the press will focus on the \"Nixonettes\" -- and 1972\nsimply is not the year for that!)\nActivities for women need to be substantive. Inaugural ball gowns of former\nFirst Ladies and other costumes to be\nshown.\nWEDNESDAY\n9:30 a. m.\nRepublican Women's Caucus\nto\n12 Noon\nPerson Responsible: Anne Armstrong\n(time ten-\ntative)\nPurpose is to highlight issues of concern\nto women and suggest avenues of partici-\npation in the campaign. Meeting to have\ntwo parts:\nIssues. Chaired by Jill Ruckelshaus.\nPanel to include people such as Lenore\nRomney and Helen Bentley. (Anne has\nasked me to be on this panel.)\nCampaign. Panel to include such people\nas Pat Hutar, a woman candidate, a woman\ncampaign manager, a woman state chairman\nfor Nixon.\nAnne hopes to have a number of the youth\ncontingent in attendance.\nAnother activity -- not officially on the convention schedule -- is a meeting\nto be held by the National Women's Political Caucus on Sunday. This\nsession would be run by Republican members (Bobbie Kilberg, Pam\nCurtis).\nCONTROVERSIAL ISSUES\nThe hottest item is the abortion question. This is \"can't win\" and we\nshould stay out of it. Some women's groups may raise the issue during\nplatform subcommittee testimony, and would probably take a position\nfavoring legalized abortion. On the other side, a couple of the right-to-\nlife groups are also scheduled to testify. It appears that both sides\nintend to make their positions known. However, I do not think there\nADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL\nADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL\n-4-\nwill be any move to insert a minority plank and/or bring the issue to the\nconvention floor.\nADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL"
