Events and Polls
Your May 4th memorandum refers to your suggestion that
my secretary consolidate the input from you (Principal
Public Presidential Activities); Mort Allin's office
(principal news events); and the polling information.
Although your suggestion might get the Events and Polls
Section to Bob quicker, that is not the only goal of the
program. The main goal, as I understand it, is to keep
those members of the staff directly responsible for the
day-to-day planning of the President's schedule (Chapin's
staff) aware of the effect of those events on the Presi-
dent's popularity. Also, Bob has come to rely on your
preparation and periodic theoretical review of this Events
and Polls material. After 3 1/2 years of handling this
assignment from Bob, I do not see the advantage to either
him or you of changing just before the election.
I have sent a copy of this memorandum to Dwight because
he may disagree with my suggestions. If Dwight disagrees,
then we should go to Bob for a final decision.

This latest update that runs through April 10 could have been down to
you, and subsequently Mr. Haldeman, two days ago. Other obligations
relating to the Canadian trip, China follow-up, and a variety of addi-
tional projects precluded the typing of this news event update until
this morning. Since this is something that you are now maintaining
for Mr. Haldeman, it seems logical that we provide the Presidential
activities information to you and your office can type it in final form.
You are in the best position to know when an update is needed, and
I suggest in the future that you call Mort Allin and me for our respective
inputs which we can provide to you in rough form so that someone in
your office may type it for Mr. Haldeman in final form.
