THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 21, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT The Camp David political group met for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Roosevelt Room. Reports were given on the New Jersey and Virginia Gubernatorial races. Concern was expressed that Congressman Cahill's attitude has not been good in trying to get his fellow Congressmen in New Jersey to work for him. Congressman Ford is going to call the New Jersey group together today. Bob Wilson reported that a recent poll in San Diego shows that Senator Murphy would get most of the Republican votes and one-third of the Democrat votes for re-election and that Governor Reagan would get twice as many Democrat votes as Unruh. This sparked very strong comments by Tower, Morton and Wilson to the effect that full backing should be given to Senator Murphy. (I have talked to Morton in accordance with a conversation I had with Haldeman. He reported back to me the other day that he has run into a brick wall on the possibility of a withdrawal and substitution in this race). Chairman Morton emphasized the importance of having Rumsfeld publicly endorse Dr. Crane. Rumsfeld has said his people are working for Dr. Crane, but he has not yet committed himself on what he will do other than voting for Crane.
