PURPOSE:
To thank him for his fine defense of your position
on NATO troops and for his fight against the
Democrats on the Water and Sewer bill on Thursday.
BACKGROUND:
1. Griffin gave a scholarly speech in the Senate on
March 22 where he attacked the Democrats for their
Caucus' position calling for a "substantial" overseas
troop cut.
2. He said that if the troop cuts are made by Congress
it "would seriously erode and undermine" the Presiden
efforts to negotiate a mutual and balanced reduction.
3. Griffin said that "ironically the Democrats move
would repudiate the policy of President Kennedy who
said
our troops are in Western Europe because it
meets a very vital need of the U.S. The security of
Europe, the freedom of Western Europe, is essential
to the security of the U.S. This is why they are there'
4. He discussed the Nixon doctrine, the China
initiative, praised the President's foreign policy
and again urged the Democrats to halt partisan
politics at the water's edge.
5. Later in the day, Griffin had some fun on the
water and sewer bill when he offered an amendment
(later withdrawn) which would "force" all Senators to
spend each and every dollar authorized and made
available to Senators. That would include stationary
allowance, clerk hire, telephone calls, wires, etc.
