THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
May 23, 1973
MEMORANDUM TO THE PRESIDENT
FROM: HERBERT G. KLEIN HK
The media interest in your statement of yesterday was the highest
I have noted in considerable time. It was difficult to get assessments
on the statement because it was outlayed in the afternoon and it is
complex. By the calls we made, however, to about 75 media
leaders I am sure we were able to vastly increase the space given
to your statement and summary.
My general impression was that most responsible people were
anxious to have more news from your side and therefore were
pleased at the prospect of the statement. We are following up
some checks on reaction and a mailing has gone out on a national
basis. One small sample of reaction is from the Alan Courtney
show in Miami. Last night they had 144 calls in support and 42
in opposition.
For your information, below are some of those reached by
telephone by myself or Ken Clawson.
Jack Krueger - Dallas Morning News
Brady Black - Cincinnati Enquirer
Clayton Kirkpatrick - Chicago Tribune
Nick Thimmesch - columnist
Edwin Hunter - Houston Post
Bill Ray - Atlanta Constitution
