(HUSTON-SAFIRE) JK March 14, 1969 Suggested Remarks for the 50th Anniversary Dinner of the American Legion On behalf of the people of the United States, I am honored to accept the American Legion's 50th Anniversary gift to the nation: permanent lighting for the Tomb of the Unknowns. This is more than a convenience to those who will visit the newly lighted Tomb in the years ahead. This gift is an example of the Legion's devotion to the memories of those men who have given their lives in the nation's service. Each of the thousands of Legion members who contributed to the purchase of this lighting system may be proud of the part they have played in making possi- ble this fitting tribute to those who have died in defense of American liberty. Of course, there is strong symbolism in this gift. Men who have felt the heat of battle are men who know the need for the light of understanding among all nations. Of all your activities, I am sure you must be particularly proud of your youth programs which reach three-quarters of a million young people every year. All of us should give recognition to this part of your work at a time when the excesses of a small minority
