Suggested Remarks for Azalea Festival
This is a festival which celebrates two things: beauty and free-
dom. The beautiful azaleas and the free nations allied in NATO
remind us that beauty cannot be fully enjoyed unless freedom is
enjoyed with it.
I understand that Queen Tricia is now an honorary sovereign of
the NATO countries. She may enjoy the honor, but just wait until her
subjects start asking her for jobs at court. I can advise her on that.
It is a hopeful sign for the world when you find a Queen, fourteen
princesses, one President, and a host of military men gather together
not to discuss the weighty problems of the world but to enjoy the flowers.
This festival honors the NATO partnership in a very appropriate
way. And it is also appropriate that your Queen this year majored in
college in Modern European History and was active in the International
Relations Club.
It was Emerson who wrote:
Tell them.
that if eyes were made for seeing,
Then beauty is its own excuse for being.
I don't think any of us here today would quarrel with that sentiment.
