3rd Draft: AF Academy Safire - 5/28/69 Gentlemen: This is a moment of quiet pride. Each one of you is properly proud to become a commissioned officer in the armed forces of the United States. Your parents, your fellow servicemen and your nation share this moment of pride. After years of study, of training, of dedicated hard work, you have earned the right to be saluted. As your Commander-in-Chief, and as the representative of the 200 million Americans you will be serving -- I salute you. In days gone by, commencement speakers would tell graduating classes what to do when they left the sheltered life of the campus to make their way in the cold, cruel world outside. This week, many young men and women are leaving the "cold, cruel campus" for what may be a more sheltered life outside. But the members of the graduating class of the Air Force Academy are beginning their careers at a time when national defense is becoming a subject of great controversy. You are becoming military officers at a particularly trying moment in American military life. On a fighting front, you are asked to be ready to make un- limited sacrifice in a limited war.
