While President Nixon is in Cairo, President and Mrs.
Sadat will reside at Tahra Palace.
Tahra Palace, which is near Qubba Palace in Heliopolis,
is a charming small building set in a lovely garden. The
palace was acquired by the royal family from a private citizen,
Muhammad Tahir Pasha, and the surrounding 8 feddans were
subsequently added.
The Tahra Palace contains some exquisite collections of
furniture and clocks. One clock is particularly famous. A copy
of the Strasburg Cathedral clock, it shows the time, the phases
of the moon, the days of the week, the month, and the weather.
In the garden is a beautiful fountain surrounded by
statues of Greek goddesses. There are many flowers and shrubs,
some of which are very rare.
Since the revolution of 1952, Tahra has been used as a
guest house. Among the distinguished statesmen who have
stayed there are Chancellor Brandt and Lebanese President
Camille Chamoun.
