TOAST FOR DINNER HOSTED BY SYRIA
Mr. President: I am most grateful for the warm reception
which you have extended.
I have been looking forward to this visit with great expecta-
tions, and my expectations have been happily fulfilled. Secretary
Kissinger has brought to us the highest praise for the charm of your
city, the warmth of your citizens, the hospitality of your country,
and the statesmanship and clarity of purpose of President Assad.
As usual, his reports have been absolutely accurate.
I am also grateful that my visit could have occurred when we
were officially re-establishing our ties on the diplomatic level. This
is a welcome development to the peoples of both of our two countries.
They have always shared a warm feeling towards each other -- a
feeling enhanced by the presence in the United States of many thousands
of Americans of Syrian descent who have enriched American life.
