10/26 Morning Press Play Monday, October 26, 1970 Major lead story this morning is the AP story which says there have been US casualties in Laos over recent months but they have not been disclosed despite earlier promises that they would be. Other front page stories receiving prominent attention vary. Several accounts of RN's active and unusual round of personal diplomacy seen front page. Goodell's "dramatic" speech for which he built suspense by allowing considerable speculation over his plans to develop during the day. Times says he did little more than review his basic campaign themes. Panthers vs. Detroit police received front page photo play; when not front page, well covered inside. 1 policeman killed, 15 young blacks arrested. Stories receiving mixed coverage include: 1) Soviets to let US officials see the generals in Armenia; 2) Right wing plot blamed for death of Chilean Army Commander; 3) Montreal's mayor wins re-election in a very heavy landslide -- took hard line against FLQ. Political stories are many: National Observer features Dickenson piece -- "A Fired-up RN Invites a Beating. " RN seen courting a political disaster if precedent holds. Two presidents (FDR and Andrew Johnson) have previously made such national barnstorming tours -- both lost badly. Ron Ins - you get The across limital 4woh 4
