October 23, 1971
(Friday newscasts, wires, THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
There are 3 major stories dominating all else:
1) Generally positive reception to Court nominees and
expectations of easy confirmations as controversy
develops over purpose of the list sent to ABA with
some charging it was "smokescreen" to embarrass
ABA. Sevareid wonders if Powell and Rehnquist
are not weak in backing up the Bill of Rights as he
sees the Court taking "a sharp rightward turn losing
some altitude. 11 2 nets with film of RN before GOP
Women saying female would be on Court yet.
2) Cost of living - - 0.2% rise - - is half of August and
third quarter is down from second quarter -- good
news resulting from freeze -- but failure of GNP to
grow as much as expected results in an overall grade
of "mixed and uncertain" for the day's economic
statistics.
3) With absence of labor members unexplained, Pay Board
got for Chairman a 67 year old Judge who emphasized
need for curbing inflation if we're to avoid disaster and
SMU's Grayson to Price Board was also confirmed.
Meanwhile the legality of the freeze was upheld by
-judge federal panel.
Other stories getting more than routine coverage:
-- Demonstrators again turn out to jeer Kosygin.
-- Tension and violence continues in Memphis.
- More testimony on the allegedly far-reaching
corruption among NYC's police.
-
The men at Fire Base Pace on the Cambodian border
who have been shelled for days and several times
refused to go into combat have been flown out - -
"routine", says Army.
-- More serious developments on Indian-Pakistan front with
no one reporting any lessening of chances of war there.
