coverage of the Dem primary and VN war. 11 The Amer. Institute for
Political Communication reaffirmed earlier findings that the 3 nets
were pro-McG in the primaries and anti-RN on VN, but also reaffirmed
that "the great bulk of reporting on news shows was straightforward and
objective 11 AIPC said 5 recent college grads, under 20, and political
liberals "persons whose normal prejudices are those with which the
nets have been charged" were monitors
Detroit NEWS editor Hayden said news in US is dominated by a Wash. -
NY axis, adding that Wash. correspondents get up and see the Times and
the Post and 'that's what we get. He said he hoped there'd be a lot of
objections to being led by 2 papers and having the news always going
from east to west. He criticized Times' reporters contention that a
reporter can refuse to go before a grand jury even before it knows what
questions will be asked and he praised New Yorker article that exposed
the myth of a plot to kill the Panthers -- a myth that was propagated by
the Times, not by all media. And he added that many papers do investi-
gate reporting, but it's not appreciated because certain people consider
only valid investigative reporting to be attacks on military or VN, or on
FBI.
Goldwater said if the US tradition of press freedom is ever curtailed,
journalists like Anderson will bear part of the blame. BG also renewed
his criticism of the Guild's endorsement of McG.

CBC opened film from Missouri of a banner saying "Disenchanted
Dems Welcome" over the front of St. Louis RN Hdqtrs, in what a spokes-
man said was response to over 60 calls from local Dems who will switch
to RN because of Eagleton's withdrawal.
Thimmesch said on CBS Spectrum and in his column that while there
are 7 M students, there are also 18 M non-student ages 18-25, and 60%
of them haven't registered yet. And "guess who they favor' -- RN.
While non-students aren't glamorous or activist, RN's campaign men
know they are there and have been searching them out, says Thimmesch.
Pro-RN youth have been slow to register because they have other things
to do - like making a living. "There's more to the young than long hair,
floppy clothes, and campus dorms, 11 says Thimmesch, who points out:
