POLITICAL MEDIA ANALYSIS October 13, 1972 (25 days THE to "PRESIDENT HAS SEEN VIETNAM - The peace rumors have cooled a bit on the return of Henry to Washington, and the chilly atmosphere that remains at Paris. President Thieu is becoming a focus of the television news -- his opposition to a coalition played up and he is being singled out as the major point of disagreement, blocking the road to peace. Last night's TV was neither favorable to Thieu, nor to the South Vietnamese who's re-taking of a hamlet, with air power predominant, was played on some nets for the second night in a row. Also, House study condemning the Phoenix program was given some TV mention very negative -- and McGovern is using a tape of an alleged veteran talking candidly about the impace of napalm on animals and people. It stunned a Minnesota student audience into silence. POLITICS The President's visit to Atalnta was the dominant political story of the day. All three nets, leading one, very favorable footage, very favorable wire copy and press reports. Good picutres. Further, two nets did reports on Georgia Senator race which showed Thompson hugging RN's coattails and everybody running away from George McGovern. One negative was that the nets unlike McGovern's big rallies all mention or devote some attention to our advance planning to get out the crowds etc. Double standard Rat at work. Win had they 25 years Beatem MCGOVERN Much less coverage than the President, but he got some television out of Boston, and some wir copy out of Minnesota. One imagines that his tape of U.S. ex-GI's revelations about the impact of napalm will be gobbled up by the networks. His speech in Boston was somewhat defensive responding to our charge of "surrender" he says RN favors surrendering POWS to four more years of captivity. Both Veep and Johnson of the veterans group got good wire copy attacking McGovern on his amnesty position. McGovern being credited with huge crowds -- again, no mention of his advance work. This morning Veep has good wire story quoting Humphrey against McGovern in Oklahoma. C&N& OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST Tribune has poll showing RN not doing so well in convincing voters of his success against inflation another argument for making this election hinge, not upon our role in handling inflation and Cayret unemployment, but upon McGovern, his radicalism and competence. Trib incidentally should be singled fout for high marks for fair coverage to RN They have done us justice every day. (Put Publubusor Cardinal Krol has front-page story in Philly, which says Polish Government wants RN re-elected.
