THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN S NEWS SUMMARY February 2, 1973 (Thursday nets, wires) The major stories of the day: VN-related topics led and dominated the nets (7-11 minutes) as reports focused on POWs, RN's address at Natl. prayer breakfast and ceasefire violations and supervision. CBS w/excerpts from interviews w/HAK on bombing and Thieu on US support. DOD received names of 10 POWs held in Laos, when it expected list to contain info on about 60, was lead on all nets. ABC called list "painfully short, 11 while CBS reported HAK said he was "disappointed" and would ask NVN for clarification. Cronkite also noted DOD's Friedheim was "equally disappointed" and said US would continue efforts for full accounting. NBC said DOD expressed "some disappointment. 11 All nets noted VC Gen. Tra, who planned '68 Tet offensive, arrived in Saigon for ICCS via US chopper. Commission is now complete and can start moving, said Cronkite. Altho all nets noted decrease in fighting, NBC film reports emphasized GVN interest in controlling territory and capability of ARVN to "hack it" w/lack of US support being "decisive factor. 11 RN's prayer breakfast statement "For 1st time in 10 years, the US Pres. is able to say the US is at peace in VN. 11 received film coverage on ABC/CBS, and got, in Rather's words, "loud, long applause. 11 R.N also urged all sides to make peace work and to let it begin "w/each and everyone in his own heart. 11 On NBC film, RN warned against isolationism that's followed other wars. All nets w/film of WH welcome for PM Heath as he began 2 days of talks w/RN CBS focused on Heath's "praise" for steadfast pursuit of peace and hope for future, while ABC/ NBC w/remarks on US-EEC relations: "vital to future of Western World. 11 Valeriani noted talks dealth w/ "ways to avoid collision on troublesome economic matters while keeping alliance strong both politically and militarily. 11 Jarriel noted threat of US-EEC trade war threatens Heath's recent economic controls.
