THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY March 6, 1973 (Monday nets, wires) The major stories of the day: - The return of the badly beaten and murdered US diplomats led ABC/CBS. All nets w/film from Andrews as Rogers led a number of Admin officials to receive the presidential airliner (noted by all nets) which brought the Noel/Moore bodies back to full military honors which, said NBC, reflected "national grief and anger. 11 Nets also w/film from Khartoum airport as Sudanese band played Auld Lang Syne before a still very shocked diplomatic community. - Rogers on NBC/ABC film and CBS noted he has no reservations over death penalty for the murderers -- no other way to deal w/them, he said. CBS led by noting report heard on other shows as well that Sudan has privately assured US it will execute the 8 terrorists. Pres. Numerei is said by NBC to be "very upset. 11 ABC also noted 2 bombs found in US installations in Casablance. - 6 minutes of POW return led NBC (Today dominated by return) and was subject of 3 minute #2 ABC/CBS story. 34 POWs freed from VC seen in quite good shape. Nets all w/clip of Capt. Leopold, ranking officer, as he said "My God, you don't know how good it is to be an American. 11 And all nets also showed what ABC called an act of courage unseen before -- Sgt. Baird painstakingly negotiating way down ramp on crutches. All nets also w/clip of 2 Filipino POWs enthusiastically welcomed by families and Marcos and the somewhat dazed W. German woman. 287 POWs still held, noted NBC but that doesn't include another 50 seen in photos or otherwise reported who aren't on Hanoi's list. - All nets noted another JMC flareup -- that's what caused delay last week, CBS noted -- as Communists walked out in protest over SVN refusal to give up proper number of POWs. As for Red warning that delay in US POW release could be caused by problem, NBC/CBS both noted WH reaffirmed that there's no linkage and all our POWs are expected out on time.
