The major stories of the day:
THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
- - "A signal victory for the Admin" as Japan gives in on
textile exports. (Film of Pete Peterson on 2 nets and
Ron Ziegler on the other.)
- - RN joins thousands in Charlotte to pay tribute to old
friend Billy Graham who in turn pays warm tribute to
the President. (Excellent CBS lead and film on all nets)
-- Formal set-up of Phase 2 (ABC lead) as CLC and Home
testing service polls differ on freeze's impact.
- - The Cecil B. DeMille production takes place in Iran but
behind the ceremony, the VP meets with exiled King
Constantine and Haile Selassie -- he'll be returning to
the US with a message for RN from the Ethiopian, just
back from China.
- - Reagan in Saigon again expresses concern over media's
treatment of GVN elections, pointing out that George
Washington had no opposition -- and there hasn't been
an election in NVN for years.

In his lead- in to Rather's excellent 3 minute
IN CHARLOTTE
report which led the CBS show, Cronkite re-
called the friendship between RN and Graham
which has existed ever since '60 when Graham
appeared at a rally with RN -- a big break.
Then brief but good film of the motorcade and
the band and the crowd. Next to the standing-
room only Colosseum where both men spoke of
the need for moral strength. It had the atmosphere
of a combination political rally -- tent revival, said
Rather. Then came about a minute of both Graham
and RN speaking. Billy told of an RN modest in
victory, philosophical in defeat; a Pres. with great
moral strength. "I have watched him make many
