NEWS SUMMARY June 9, 1972 (Thurs. nets, wires, mags, columns) Major stories of the day: THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN -- NBC/CBS led that House passed 218-180 and sent to RN what UPI called a "landmark" aid to education bill including what NBC/ABC called "the strongest anti-busing measure ever passed. 11 NBC noted Admin had called it ¹¹a landmark in higher educ" and said RN is expected to sign it. ... On CBS Schorr said the one-line amendment on busing has overshadowed fact that bill is "biggest boost to colleges" ever Richardson praised bill but said it was "deficient" in its busing provisions and hoped Hill would still enact RN's busing bill. -- Kleindienst was confirmed by Senate 64-19 following rejection 63-20 of recommittal motion Kleindienst on all 3 nets said he was grateful for vote, happy it was all over, and wanted to get on with the important business of being Att. Gen. Strawser, on CBS, noted that "to the end liberal Dems argued, mostly to empty desks. 11 Stern, on NBC, said it's not clear how long RK will stay as he was opposed from start by key WH aides who feel their position strengthened by subsequent events. "Even RN reportedly was angered" by RK's handling of nomination, said Stern, and he noted RK's law firm has newly opened DC office where RK could end up after Nov. ABC's Geer said the only surprise of the day was the low number of those voting no. -- US B-52s hit NVN for 1st time since April and overall raids were heaviest in 3 weeks reaching to within 20 miles of PRC border ARVN marines moved in above Hue. NBC/CBS noted DOD briefings on success of mining (no mention on ABC) and air raids Gen. Eade, on CBS, said success of air raids was due in large part to laser bombs CBS Schieffer reported on AF photos of bomb damage; he noted that photos show AF had knocked out bridges, generators, and gas storage areas.
