Thomas leads: "First Lady PN, criticizing Jane Fonda's charges of
US bombing damage in NVN said the actress should have asked Hanoi 'to
stop their aggression. I She reacted sharply to a question about Fonda's
statements.
11 "Fielding some sensitive questions about her views and
RN's political future, PN tensed somewhat when asked about abortions. 11
She said she's not for it "it's a personal thing. I mean abortion on
demand wholesale. 11 And UPI reports PN denied reports that RN had
once undergone psychotherapy. "He's never had any psychological prob- -
lems, 11 she said. "He's never lost a day for health reasons. 11 She pro-
fessed she was pleased with the polls. "Dick has laid the course. He
wants to carry it out. He's done a marvelous job in the peace field. "
Thomas says Mrs. Nixon indicated for the first time since she has been
in the WH that she is concerned about Presidential security and
reports that Bremer stalked RN had made the difference.
UPI has features on both PN and Mrs. Agnew. Thomas' feature
on the 1st Lady is headed: "Pat Nixon Determined to Chart Own Course
as First Lady. 11 It leads by saying that PN has tried to make come true
that Presidential saying that the WH belongs to the people rather than to
the Chief Executives. "She has vigorously promoted an 'open door' policy
based on the idea that everyone is welcome, 'not just the big shots. 111
Tho "under tremendous pressure' in $69 to take on a pet project, PN
has remained "determined to be herself and confident of her own abilities, 11
t ho she carried on the work of her predecessors to preserve and
enhance the WH.
Thomas goes on to say that "despite her unassuming style, PN's
impact on the public consciousness has grown slowly but surely.
Meanwhile, her travels more ambitious than those of any other 1st
Lady in history have made her a celebrity abroad.

home or overseas, her aim is simple: "I want to meet the people. I
