The major stories of the night:
-- All nets again led w/the Munich aftermath. "Well, it happened,"
began Smith as all nets started /"what Israel did" -- the Munich
victims were scarcely in their graves, said Cronkite and Israel
announced 10 raids deep into Syria and Lebanon. Lead reports
all featured film from Cleveland where the slain David Berger
was buried as his family and rabbi continued to voice hope that
there'd be no reprisals of violence.
Second major story on all shows was wholesale price rise -- it's
gone up more rapidly in past year than in the year before controls,
began all reports. Stein on both ABC/NBC film minimizing food
price problem and saying it was not an issue as McG has no way
to get them down either and in fact, said Stein, they'd increase
more under McG.
Film reports on all nets, quite critical on NBC/CBS, on the con-
fusion, "maze of contradictions" and "bizarre" nature of the Hoffa
story on which, said Cronkite, it appeared the Admin. 's right hand
didn't know what the left was doing. Rogers reportedly "furious"
over the incident. Brief clip on CBS of RN to 1701.
McG on CBS/NBC film charging another scandal in Admin., this
time on the Soviet grain deal where USDA allegedly engaged in a
"conspiracy of silence" w/exporters who made ¹tens of millions"
which should have gone to farmers. CBS had over 4 minutes' film
review of McG's active week as he got off the defensive and focused
on "corruption, favoritism and evoked the image of 'Tricky Dick¹, 11
said Morton.
NBC also had film of Calif. AFL-CIO's overwhelm-
ing criticism of RN -- tho non-endorsement of McG
ABC/CBS
w/film of Eagleton and Shriver in Missouri.
All nets noted wide looting -- "mobs of soldiers" and disorder in
Phnom Penh w/rice prices sky high and a serious food shortage.
NBC/CBS film on US Olympic racers Matthews and Collett as they
casually conducted selves during Star Spangled Banner. IOC has
thus barred them from future competition. Sympathetic NBC/CBS
reports to the athletes' contention that their indifference was not
