Major Stories of the Day:
- - RN-Gromyko signing SALT agreements led ABC and was
halfway thru the other shows w/ film of the duo expressing
hopes for peace.
- - Nader's indictment of Congress for abdicating its role and
allowing big business and Admin to run it was lead on NBC
w/ film on all 3 and backup by Brinkley on NBC. Note also
given to Nader's charge that this Admin. is "most venal, 11
"Most corrupt" in US history.
- - Frustration of Dem hopes for Watergate probe by House
Banking was on ABC/CBS film as 6 Dems joined all GOP
members to defeat Patman call for subpeona power by a
20-15 vote.
- - McG on all nets w/ focus on his huge crowd in Boston,
his continuing emphasis on most corrupt Admin ever - -
now we're a "moral affront" -- and his declaration that
crime and drug control would be his #1 domestic priority.
2 nets noted that w/ the large Boston crowd, McG's
refusal to believe polls is understandable.
- - The VP also on film on all nets in pro-RN Indiana where
he pointed to Admin accomplishments on crime control
and strongly defended US bombing in wake of NVN attempt
to overrun SVN. He called on critics to stop running down
their own country all the time and to look at what the enemy
is doing.
- - The mystery of the controversial F-Ill's fate led CBS w/
unconfirmed reports that it has again been pulled from
combat in light of unexplained disappearance of one of
the planes over Indochina
Film on all nets from
Subic Bay as the battered Newport News limped in for repairs
and sailors told of the accidental tragedy for which NVN/VC
are claiming credit.
