The News Leader says the Mint's Mary Brooks "has a hunch"
RN will appoint Helen Bentley as DOT Secy. Participating in one of
3 such campaign teams, Mrs. Brooks said RN appreciates women's
value, including PN's and his daughters. She says PN "has bloomed
into a tremendous personality. It was always there. She was always
very interested in people
especially children. 11
In Chicago, last week, 3 black RN appointees -- Bob Brown,
Samuel Jackson, and Stanley Scott -- along with Pres. Hurst of
Malcolm X College, announced plans for a get out the vote drive for
RN's reelection. Hurst predicted that at least 1/4 of Chicago's black
voters will back RN. Hurst ripped McG as "a man of no moral principle, "
adding that "if the day after he's nominated, he'll run to Daley to make
some new alliance, the day after he's elected he'll run to some other
racists to make some new alliances. 11
WATERGATE/GRAIN DEAL
CBS/NBC noted Rep. Patman ordered GAO to investigate the
Watergate affair and report its finding by Oct. 26. He told GAO to
determine who contributed $100, 000 that was transferred thru Mexico,
and exactly how it was used in connection with the breakin: He also
told it to determine if GOP officials had destroyed records concerning
the case.
Judge Sircia prohibited anyone connected with the Watergate case
"from making any extrajudicial statements to anyone, including the
news media. " McG said he does not think the order inhibits candidates
and "other interested public figures" from discussing the case. He
accused the Att. Gen. of entering into a political agreement with the
defendants "that no one should be permitted to speak to the people about
these acts. 11
Following Today 8 a.m. note of House Banking's refusal to investi-
gate Watergate, O'Brien, on film, said it's beyond his comprehension
that MCs wouldn't take the opportunity to investigate it was really a
responsibility to do so. He said the Admin. won a victory for "secrecy,
suppression and skulduggery" at the highest levels.
An EMK spokesman said the idea of an investigation was not dead,
but "we are about where we were, 11 presumably meaning there was little
chance a probe would be started before Cong. adjourns.
