NEWS SUMMARY December 20, 1972 (Tuesday nets, wires, columns) HAS SEEN The major stories of the day: - Nets dominated (ABC/CBS leads) w/10-14 minute reports on the VN situation. "Hundreds" of US planes "hammered away relent- lessly" led Cronkite, in what ABC/CBS noted NVN has called heaviest bombing of war and what Chancellor said may be the heaviest of any war. And, according to wires, it was costliest day in air war to US as well w/2 B52s and another plane down and 8 men missing, apparently including 6 paraded by Hanoi before foreign press. ABC/CBS film as US in Saigon announced loss of the B52s Xuan Thuy on all nets charging "betrayal" and "deliberate distortion" by HAK who allegedly asked for 126 changes. ABC/NBC included Thuy clips as he charged peace was never as near as HAK said. Kalischer and AP regarded Thuy's tone as "generally moderate." From WH Jarriel said if final thread of talks is broken, US wants blame squarely on NVN. Valeriani said he was cautioned by WH against excessive pessimism and told thatit wouldn't take much for HAK-Tho to get together again. Kalb at State says argument over DMZ's status was key in switch from talking to bombing HK Smith rapped those saying Geneva accord of 154 was exclusively talking of 1 VN -- it also said VN was, w/division by DMZ, 2 distinct parts. And NVN -- and NY Times - - is ignoring that, said Smith. Hill pressure seen to be mounting in ABC/CBS clips w/Javits, Muskie, Symington, HHH speaking out vs Hebert and Brock in support of RN's move. And NBC w/over 3 minutes of generally depressed and disappointed POW/MIA relatives Brinkley sees no reason for the delay in signing -- why spend so much time haggling over words that'll mean nothing when one side deter- mines them "inconvenient? " Sevareid focused on lack of Western preparation already for the Year of Europe -- the VN delay can only worsen the situation, said Eric.
