THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY January 26, 1973 (Thursday nets, wires) The major stories of the day: Altho LBJ's Wash. funeral and Texas graveside rites led 2 ABC/NBC and was lengthy report on CBS as well, VN was the dominant story. All nets w/film of Rogers w/Canada's Sharp who said his country will send supervisory forces to VN but only for a 60-day trial period to see if they are effective. NBC's Utley said Sharp was "neither enthusiastic nor optimistic. 11 CBS was only net w/film of Waldheim who, after meeting w/Rogers, said the UN was ready to help especially w/relief and reconstruction but it was up to parties involved to tell UN what to do. NBC/CBS w/film as Thieu told SVN's national police they have an important job (NBC) and warned them not to enjoy the illusion of peace. (CBS.) Thieu on film said there is no danger, he is calm and confident provided Communists don't violate cease-fire. But when they can't win militarily or politically, there's nothing they can do All nets noted Thieu said cease-fire commission was useless and helpless. The best peace guarantee is a strong army. Lengthy NBC film of NVN's Trinh arriving in Paris (CBS briefly noted) and being greeted by large crowd chanting "victory VN. 11 In lead note, both NBC/CBS reported GI was KIA when VC launched rocket attack on Bien Hoa air base. Cronkite said, "As the world awaits peace, the war drags doggedly on. 11 He added there will be some "unlucky lasts" and if we're "lucky" 2 of them have already occurred as he noted GI and US ship struck by NVN mortars. NBC's Utley noted the GI was killed 48 hours before the cease-fire Negative ABC report on VN's cost to the military.
