(Tues. nets, wires, columns)
The nets were dominated by Pentagon Papers and Watergate
developments w/focus on Senate call for special prosecutor --
emphasized on all. 13 minutes on CBS and 19 minutes on both NBC/
ABC. A review:

It didn't seem possible, led Chancellor, but there were even more
sensational developments. NBC opened w/5 very critical minutes
of JDE involvement w/Hunt - Liddy activities and his possible
"suppression of evidence of a crime" while serving at WH. RN's
orders have been connected w/an illegal operation, said Chancellor
All nets noted defense was "outraged" and CBS said they see JDE
role as "fatal blow" to prosecution w/reporter Graham saying
it's "increasingly dubious" case will go to jury.
Ellsberg on
ABC/CBS film questioning RN's confidence in his aides, wondering
if RN himself had not ordered the entire criminal activities of
campaign and foreseeing "indictment" of RN. Defense also, noted
ABC, accused WH of offering Byrne an "open bribe" by promising
him a job at a time when JDE knew of the break-in.
HRH/JDE on film on all nets saying they'l be cleared of innuendoes
and charges
Kleindienst on ABC seeing no reason for outside
prosecutor and saying he's not bitter but feels very fortunate for
his opportunities. NBC/CBS clips of the AG defending Justice's
investigation.

RN speech didn't go far enough to satisfy critics, led Cronkite
NBC's Duke called Hill reaction "poor" and said it didn't please
anyone w/most criticism coming over absence of special prosecutor
Similarly ABC's Clark said RN "disappointed many'' on Hill
ABC also w/film from pro-RN -- in '72-Ga. campus w/one student
after another critical of speech.
Chancellor called public reaction
"mixed" and "not enthusiastic. 11 Sevareid said "haunting" questions
remain as to RN's lack of knowledge of coverup and his continuing
refusal to name special prosecutor
Reasoner said "lying" con-
tinues -- in light of JDE resignation letter and Pentagon Papers
story -- and RN failed to satisfactorily explain why WH has
