THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN WEEKEND NEWS REVIEW June 18, 1973 The major stories of the weekend: -Brezhnev arrival led all nets Sat. nite and Sunday Post, Star and Sun. (Dean on Krogh telling him "Oval Office" ordered Ellsberg burglary led Times while Trib and NY News had local leads.) Brezhnev arrival photos on all front pages while Sat. nets had to settle for long-distance shots of plane's arrival. Distaste w/tight security and limits on coverage was evident on nets Sat. Sun. they had Russ-provided footage from the arrival. Sat, NBC began its list of film for the nite by saying we will not show you film of Brezhnev arrival. Nessen made several remarks indicating their feeling it's "reported" Rogers met him; it's "claimed" Brezhnev went to CD. CBS reporter said Brezhnev is getting things his way in US just as he does at home. And ABC film showed fact there were "even guard dogs''at Andrews. -NBC Sun. led w/RN-HAK film prior to HAK going to CD. Clip also on CBS in #2 story. NBC Sun had over 12-mins. on Summit Sun, plus another 4 1/2 on problem of Soviet fishing fleets off Newfoundland. Newman observed Brezhnev's visit should be 1 of highlights of RN's Admin, but will no doubt be "overshadowed'. by Dean's testimony. Film on nets as 8, 000-10,000 gathered at Capitol for a rally demanding free emigration privileges for Soviet Jews. Then a "freedom march" to Ellipse. Jackson on film at rally as well as earlier on Face the Nation as he renewed fears Russ will "take advantage" of RN due to Watergate. - In a call to Thomas, Mrs. Mitchell says RN "always knew what was going on" re: Watergate. "I'll be damned if I'll let my husband take the rap for Mr. Pres, 11 she said. "Dean Warms Up For Big Waterspill" was News head on story widely covered in Sun papers and on Sat. nets. Dean was before investigators more than 5 hours. Asst. Counsel Edmisten said Dean's testimony was "quite different" from testimony thus far and that Dean answered all questions; NBC said reportedly Dean will say RN had no knowledge of breakin but was "knee deep" in cover-up. Dean is reported to have talked "freely and frankly" and in conflict w/previous testimony. News further quoted sources as saying Dean planned to charge that RN agreed to make up to $1M available in "hush money". Dean reportedly "assumes" RN was aware of coverup all along as Dean was reporting to HRH/JDE on his own efforts to cover it up.
