THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN Dr.B NEWS SUMMARY June 29, 1973 (Thursday nets, wires) The major stories of the day: -- Hearings began w/Dean on the offensive and ended w/a GOP solon (Weicker) joining Dean on the offensive, led HKSmith, while Mudd said in lead there was a WH "attack" on Dean's credibility and then search by Baker for answer for a central question -- what did RN know and when did he learn about it. In their 7-13 min. reports, all nets focused on clips of "angry" (NBC) Ervin who, "accused" WH of violating first and fourth Amend. and got a "to the contrary" remark from Dean when he asked. if RN acted in a way to get the facts out .... Baker on ABC/CBS clips "took another step by step look at that crucial" (ABC) Sept. 15 meeting and "methodically" (CBS) went over Dean's contacts w/RN to separate knowledge from hearsay. Dean on ABC film said at 1 point in meeting he told RN the matter had been contained," but couldn't be contained indefinitely. Then in what ABC called a "highly emotional note, it was "turn of GOP" Weicker (NBC) to attack WH as he read off a "litany" (CBS) of charges against the Admin. w/all noting Weicker had asked Cox to investigate them. On NBC clip Weicker read list of illegal matters "proven or admitted" by Admin, , including conspiracy to obstruct justice and investiga- tion, destruction of evidence, and burglary, and Admin's "unconstitutional acts. Clip on all as Weicker announced there'd be no more threats, intimidation, innuendo, or working thru press to destroy credibility on any more comm. members or witnesses, w/ABC/CBS continuing w/"biggest burst of applause from audience since hearings began" (CBS). -- Noting "talk" or "suggestions" RN appear before comm., all nets reported WH "flatly" (ABC) said RN won't appear voluntarily and will ignore a subpoena N.B. Tho ABC/CBS noted WH questions briefly, none of the nets w/film of Inouye asking them.
