NBC found a quite positive to overwhelming response. But ABC w/Chicago commuters and Detroit blue collars found very negative reaction. And CBS w/"open hostility¹¹ in a Milwaukee working men's bar where there was strong RN support in Nov. Rather and Kiker both emphasized a number of questions remained unanswered, w/reference by both to the Gray phone call. Reasoner sees RN having said all he intends to and deciding it's time for the courts to handle the matter. If this is end of what RN has to say, public is left w/negative and unsatisfactory conclusion RN seen as less than not guilty w/case "not proved, 11 said Reasoner CBS poll by ORC to 600 via phone after speech found that by 60-22 public believes RN is still holding back impt. details. Rather said RN asked for trust, but wouldn't give up the tapes and some, including Goldwater, fail to see RN diverting suspicions on basis of speech. If that's a widespread reaction, RN may be able to get back to problems of US but Rather said basic problem will remain: Restoring trust. Ervin on film on all nets denying Comm. was out to implicate RN and that members would like nothing more than to clear RN but tapes are essential.
