Meeting is at VP's request, but Warren said he was "absolutely sure on basis of 1st hand knowledge" that reports RN had asked or would ask for VP's resignation were "absolutely false. 11 Jarriel suggested "urgency" of meeting's linked to pending Richardson announcement whether to let grand jury pursue investigation. Valeriani said the WH sources say purpose of meeting is to knock down speculation about VP's future, the fact VP's meeting w/RN immediately after his return to DC will only serve to heighten that speculation. Cronkite noted spokesman for both RN-VP "sought to dispel" any suggestion of "crisis. 11 RN asked Hill to postpone fed/military pay increases for 60 days til Dec. 1, declaring it'd "needlessly fan the flames of inflation. 11 Action noted by all nets NBC/CBS noted gov't will order mandatory allocation of propane gas, particularly important to farmers w/harvest approaching. Film on all nets of jury verdict finding Gainesville 8 innocent. ABC noted (NBC w/film) defendants saying trial was a political trial and defense atty's saying Gov't better stop using paid in- formants and infiltrators to suppress legitimate protest. Chancellor called it "another in a long list of defeats for Justice" in cases involving conspiracy. Stern called it the "end of an era" for Justice w/most of the great conspiracy trials lost, e.g., Camden, Chicago, Harrisburg, Gainesville, as well as the Ellsberg and Lesley Bacon cases. Stern finds gov't eagerness in bringing the trials partly to blame because of reliance on informants of doubtful background who may themselves have stirred up trouble. Stern noted even Kliendienst conceded a year ago that Gainesville depended on informers of "uncertain character" CBS' Graham w/similar negative look at Justice record: of 66 tried, only 1 -- Berrigan -- ever went to jail.
