The major stories of the day:
Gesell rules firing of Cox was "illegal, arbitrary and unreasonable"
but stops short of reinstating Cox, who, all nets noted, isn't
interested in returning anyway. Thus, noted all shows, action is
seen as giving increased security to Jaworski. Led ABC/NBC
and was part of CBS lead
Sen. libs "seized" on decision to
push for court-apptdprosecutor, said both ABC/NBC. Mathias/
Bayh on ABC film pushing their bill as was Abzug saying Hill
now has impeachable offense: obstruction of justice. Nessen
noted Senate Judiciary Libs "shrugged" off Gesell's opposition
to court-appt'd prosecutor. "Most unfortunate" is how he regards
idea, said ABC which noted Sirica feels the same way.
Sirica said RN can release any info to Spec. Pros. or public
whenever he wishes. CBS led w/this as part of "a flurry of
of court rulings" and featured Graham report that add'l info
is already being given to Jaworski, including RN/JDE/Krogh
tapes. NBC also noted voluntary coop. w/Jaworski
Jarriel
said Sirica's "green light" put "heavy pressure" on RN to deliver
the info as he's been promising to MCs. Wyatt (R-Ore.) and
Lamar Baker (R-Tenn) on film saying RN assured them he'd
make info public depending on Sirica. Jarriel said WH is studying
Sirica statement
Brokaw on NBC said 80 Hill GOP were
"impressed" by RN and gave him standing ovation after he
answered questions and charges ranging from ⁷gate to ITT
and milk deal
"Brutally frank" was NBC Duke's description
of RN session Tues. w/GOP Sens who all feel RN must appear
in some public forum to answer questions. Dole, Brooke (also
on ABC) and Ba ker all on NBC emphasizing gravity of situation.
But Duke said for all the tough talk, the Sens. were still uncertain
RN got the message
RN willing to meet w/Ervin/Baker, noted
ABC/CBS but Ervin said nothing doing unless full Comm is there.
NBC's Brokaw said RN doesn't feel it's appropriate for any
Pres. to be questioned by a Hill Comm and counsels, especially
a Dash
As for turning over more materials, Sirica said
he wants, nothing more than has been subpoenaed as he doesn't
wish to be a "depository. 11 ABC/CBS noted.
