No dominant story this morning. Major foreign news is the
agreement, apparently hopeful, to set up a new coalition in Belfast,
which will consult with Dublin on decisions; it has the support of
Ulster and GB. Big news in Times and Post. Protestants and
Catholics to join in the coalition.
Another 5% cut in Arab oil production in January is promised; also,
Arabs contend that the cut-off will not end until Israel starts
withdrawing from Arab lands, and that withdrawal is guaranteed by
the United States. Kissinger in Europe promising U.S. oil assistance
to Dutch and others, like the Portguese, who helped during the Middle
East war, and who now bear brunt of the embargo.
Les Aspin, the publicized anti-Pentagon zealot, reports that RN's
campaign got $5. 4 million in contributions from defense contractors,
the 100 top. Gets a good ride this morning in Eastern papers.
Ford says that RN's "total disclosure" of personal finances should
reassure, "reasonable members of Congress, 11 On ABC he says
some may feel RN should have paid "higher taxes" but the full
disclosure should now settle the issue. Washington Post is playing
very high the $80,000 paper deductions RN took the final day of 1968.
An interesting story this morning is the education study that says
compulsory schooling should perhaps end at 14 -- with credit for
high school given to those doing equivalent work outside.
