The major stories of the day:
Along w/cool homes and less than full gas tanks, US faces
potentially grave wheat shortage and prospect of sky-rocketing
bread prices, led CBS which proceeded to say "RN moved to
counterattack the crisis.

RN's 5-month suspension of
wheat imports for 1st time since WWII also led ABC and
NBC, in #8 story, said RN actions should help limit bread
price hikes.
All nets w/film on background of situation,
focusing on high level of US wheat exports.
Simon wouldn't oppose some price rollbacks if they don't
discourage industry's ability to make new investments. Led NBC
w/film tho not noted by others. Levine doubts Simon's
stance will satisfy Hill. as his rollbacks would result in only
1¢ savings at pump.
All nets noted, ABC w/film, that
Simon finds his 20% prediction of gasoline shortage is "only
too accurate. 11
CBS film, note by all, that Hawaii begins
1st statewide mandatory rationing next week.

from NYC where 1 of 4 stations has already run out of its
January allocation and others are running out, headed for early
closing.
ABC energy film looked at impact on auto-oriented
economies of Detroit-area cities as layoffs continue w/the
decline of car sales.
Jackson on NBC/CBS rapping oil
execs for criticizing his Subcomm. after they left the hearing
room and, on CBS, sarcastically jabbing Gulf for its acquisi-
tion of Ringling Brothers.
Sevareid ruminated on the
tough time the non-politically@oriented oil execs had on Hill
w/WH hopefuls Percy/Jackson running against them.
ABC
film from Fla. where special legisl. session may be called to
declare State exempt from DST as 8 kids have been killed by
cars there since it was instituted.
"An impt. development, 11 said Utley in story placed #2, 3 and 4
on the 3 nets -- Calif. Secy of State Brown says there's proof
that deed for RN's VP papers was backdated. Film of Brown
