received.

of PN, Julie, Tricia, and RMW
PN was described as "radiantly
happy¹¹ over RN's reception. Tricia called it "wonderful. 11 Helen
Smith said family feeling was 1 of "relief and joy" that RN got such
a "great reception. 11
joint
AP notes VP at his lst/session was particularly warmly received.
HILL REACTION
UPI leads: "GOPs initially appeared pleased, almost relieved
w/SOTU.
11
AP found RN's W'gate comments drew acid comment
from Dems.
UPI's Gerstel leads: "For RN, '1 year of W'gate's enough. 1
For many others, it's already been too much. But for those MCs
who are seeking to avoid decision on impeachment, there was no
out in SOTU. 11 For those who have to consider impeachment the
rest of the speech -- the recap of 5 years' achievements and the
ambitious 10-pt. program for '74 was secondary to RN's W'gate
comments. As ''thoughtful lib" Phil Hart reflected, "How unreal.
RN seemed to be telling Judiciary he'd cooperate w/it the way I've
cooperated with other committees. Those materials I want you
to have, I'll give you!"
VP called it "a great SOTU speech. 11
Percy on ABC called it "1 of best speeches" he's ever heard
RN make. He was encouraged by RN's offer to cooperate w/Judiciary.
Speech helped GOP, but more impt, gave the country assurance that
despite Watergate we will move ahead on major problems. Percy
was uncertain what RN promise to cooperate means but he's glad
RN reached out and he noted Dems responded very vigorously.
