The Major Stories of the Day:
- Tentative agreement of truckers' strike led ABC/NBC (#3 CBS)
but nets noted pact needs to be sold to truckers, of whom (NBC
noted) only 10% were represented in DC talks. But net film
reports emphasized truckers waiting out strike at Indiana,
Kansas City, N.J., and Atlanta truck stops are confused and
remain unconvinced w/some insisting trucks won't roll til price
roll-back is approved.
ABC/NBC noted scattered incidents
of violence.
Fewer, said Chancellor, as NBC/CBS noted
WH preparing interagency contingency plan to assure highways
remain open. DOD involved in planning but its role wasn't
specified.
ABC/NBC had 10-12 minutes of energy-related news (CBS
5-1/2 min.) focusing on ramifications of truck strike effects
on small towns in W. Va. & and Ky., "spectacularly higher"
(NBC) prices of produce in past week. ABC/CBS noted Simon's
urging regional plans for gas distribution. ABC w/film on
Westport, Conn. effort to solve its own gas distribution problem.
NBC w/film on wake-like convention of car dealers in Las Vegas
where Sawhill (on film) gave them a lecture rather than a solution
to their problem.

All nets noted VP said (on CBS film) personally received RN's
assurance 10 days ago that release of transcripts of WH tapes
was actively being considered. CBS' Jones said "WH came
back w/what amounted to a put down" w/Warren saying WH is
considering disclosures, but info belongs in courts and not in
public "as RN's VP had suggested. 11 On NBC film VP asserted
Judiciary should define impeachment specifically, e.g., in
Constitutional terms of high crimes and misdemeanors, a
definition reporter Mackin noted differed widely from VP's
'70 definition: "Whatever House says it is. "
