The major stories of the day: -- By far the largest crowd RN has seen in months greeted him in Huntsville, said Pierpoint in #4 CBS story Over 30,000 was ABC estimate in #6 story And in lead story, NBC said the large crowd of wellwishers reflected RN's higher poll standing in South than elsewhere. ABC film also from Indianapolis where RN picked up Julie in detour also noted by other nets, Brokaw saying RN left Huntsville undoubtedly pleased w/ cheers and determined to do some cheering-up on his own for Julie. CBS also said reception was doubtless a "morale-booster" for RN, SO much so aides hint a non-Southern appearance is under consideration. Clips on ABC/NBC as RN said: "Here in the heart of Dixie we find the heart of Amer is good, character of nation is strong, and we're going to continue to be a great nation when we're 200 yrs old. 11 Both clips began w/ RN noting tendency of DC press to report only bad news and to give distorted view that US is sick. CBS clip as RN said in remark also noted by others: "we always become stronger when going gets tougher Americans aren't a nation of quitters. We'll keep fighting til we succeed. 11 CBS/NBC opened clips w/ RN coming off plane to reception by Wallace. ABC film of NBC-noted "God Bless You, Mr. Pres. 11 ABC clip continued as Wallace assured RN "you're among friends here. 11 Jarriel called it a "warm embrace" by the Gov, but Pierpoint called it "properly cordial" and "somewhat formal" as Wallace said "we've always honored the office of Pres. All nets noted only a few critical signs HKSmith criticized RN's lack of communication, citing rhetorical speeches and non-existent relations w/ press along w/ "host of confusions" w/in Admin. re: energy and economy. Meany on all nets urging impchment and ridiculing idea that AFL-CIO is involved in conspiracy to get RN.
