The major stories:
"Unexpected and important" was Chancellor's lead description
of Colson pleading guilty to one charge of obstruction of justice
in Ellsberg case in exchange for other counts being dropped.
Courtroom was "stunned" and JDE's atty "flabbergasted, "
said CBS in lead where Cronkite said RN's ex-special counsel
may know more about RN's involvement or non-involvement
than anyone
in W'gate-related cases./
Also 4 minute lead on ABC where
"surprise" nature of move was emphasized as was Colson's
extensive knowledge of WH affairs.
Few knew more of
what went on in WH, said NBC and Colson could be of "enormous
value" to probers.
On ABC/CBS film Colson said he's "watched
w/a very heavy heart the country I love being torn apart by most
divisive and bitter controversy in US history. I want to be free
to contribute to that resolution no matter whom it may help, no
matter whom it may hurt. 11 He pointed to impact Gesell's
words re: govt of laws not men had upon him. NBC clip, also
on ABC, as Colson regretted what he'd attempted to do, saying
it was wrong to do to anyone. He hopes his plea will help avoid
similar abuses.
ABC only net to cover Judiciary, w/clip of
McClory calling for tougher action against RN for defying sub-
poenas. He suggested House censure something to back
Judiciary up.
LEAA's Santarelli reportedly has resigned, said NBC/CBS in
#2 story. Also noted by ABC w/all nets noting his criticisms
of Admin.
All noted RN to leave Mon. on 9-day trip to M-E including Egypt,
Israel, Jordan, Saudi and perhaps Syria w/rest stop in Salzburg
en route. Valeriani said it'll be primarily a pr and goodwill trip
w/little of substance involved.
Israeli Parliament voted 60-51 to
approve Rabin's Govt. confidence ABC film; note by others w/CBS calling it
one of closest-ever/votes.
Is/Syria reached accord on details
of disengagement faster than expected. Briefly noted on all shows
as was unlikelihood that guerrillas will be represented in Geneva.
HKS amended his Fri. tribute to HAK saying Acheson, not
HAK, deserves to rank as man who's done the most for peace in
this century.
