Harris reports 2/3 now favor impchmnt and 51% are
for conviction -- a "startling" increase since Comm
hearings, noted NBC/ABC. 31% opposed to conviction.
54% on Long Island favor impchmnt compared to last
month when 39% felt that way in Newsday poll.
Jack Kilpatrick advised his Agronsky colleagues not
to minimize the passionate support that still exists for
RN. But they belittled this group and even Kilpatrick
acknowledged they were unaware of the evidence and
didn't care what had happened to RN's advisers. We all
know about "those people,' said Lisagor, but they're
not voluminous. Rowan said "those kind" of people, ie,
unaware of evidence, etc., aren't in House. Sidey
rapped Kilpatrick for thinking public doesn't know what's
going on when the conservative said he doubted if many
of those pro-impch were students of the evidence either.
Bulletin's Grady says one way to reduce the passion
of the RN loyalists would be to play the tapes on TV
and radio SO all can hear.
Inquirer hopes "House will slam the door shut, hard"
on the WH call for consideration of Frey proposal, and
judging by the negative salutes, GOPs as well as Dems are
SO disposed.'
NY News hopes current "bandwagon
psychology" will dissipate over next 2 wks as House
should decide the issue after carefully examining the
evidence. Re: 1st 2 Articles, "it's difficult to tell
precise extent to which RN's being held to blame for his
own actions rather than deeds of subordinates. /Some/
conclusions of Comm are based largely on hearsay, sus-
picion and opinion hung together w/ free-wheeling
inferences. NY News feels much harder and more skeptical
scrutiny is needed on floor.
In "early scouting report,' Morton of CBS reported
Albert may not vote -- to preserve integrity of chair.
There are only 187 GOPs, thus Dem help is needed to pre-
vent impchmnt and tho S. Dem leader Waggonner against
impchmnt, 3 S. Dems on Comm were for it, making it
"respectable." And ex-Judge Preyer says while Southerners
don't like killing the king, they also have feel for
Const. and religion, eg. one southern lady wondering if
RN was still being "received" in social circles, given
his swearing.
